About ISO/TS 16949

The QMS Standard for Automotive Supply-Chain

ISO/TS16949 was developed by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) and Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association Inc (JAMA), with support from ISO/TC 176, Quality Management and Quality Assurance. The standard aims to reduce variation in the automotive industry supply chain through sector-specific requirements for a quality management system. It also provides for continual improvement, emphasizing defect prevention and addresses design/development, production and, when relevant, installation and servicing of automotive-related  products.

The requirements of ISO 16949 go beyond those of ISO 9001 by requiring additional documents such as:

- Failure Mode and Effect Analysis  (FMEA)

- Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP)

- Measurement System Analysis (MSA)

- Supplier system development

- Incident Premium Freight

- Preventive and Predictive Maintenance

- Error Proofing

- Statistical Process Control (SPC)

- Product Part Approval Process

- Control Plan

The IATF has developed a common registration scheme for supplier 3rd party registration to the ISO/TS 16949. The registration scheme includes third party auditor qualifications and common rules for consistent global registration.

The IAOB is an International Automotive Task Force (IATF) oversight office. The IAOB is a Michigan Corporation; members include DaimlerChrysler, Ford Motor Company, General Motors and the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG).

The International Automotive Oversight Bureau (IAOB) was established primarily to implement and manage the ISO/TS 16949 registration scheme oversight activities on behalf of the IATF.
